The budget for 2007/2008 tabled by Executive Mayor Mathabo Leeto, signifies growth, development and hope in the future of Matjhabeng. Matjhabeng Local Municipality’s total budget for 2007/2008 is R1, 117 billion. A delegation from Xai Xai Municipality in the People’s Republic of Mozambique, headed by Mayor Rita Bento Muianga, female counterpart of Executive Mayor Mathabo Mokapo visited Matjhabeng Local Municipality on a three day exchange programme. The purpose of the visit was to identify possible areas of cooperation, to share ideas about systems, poverty alleviation programmes and governance in general. An underground visit gave the visitors a first hand experience about the working conditions of migrant workers from Mozambique. OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE TO TASK An Oversight Committee for Matjhabeng Local Council was established by Council as a Section 79 Ad Hoc Committee (Resolution A2/2007). Its task is to interrogate the Municipality’s Annual Report for 2005/2006 and make recommendations to Council at its meeting in April 2007. Councillors that were appointed in the Oversight Committee are Cllr Ben Montshioa, Cllr Patrick Motshabi and Cllr Piet Botha. Members of the community that were appointed are Mr. Lemmy Mule, Mrs. Fabia Kgaeane and Mrs. Lucy Losaba. The Oversight Committee will convene at 17:00 at Room 427, Fourth Floor, Civic Centre, Welkom, on the following dates: 15 March 2007, 21 March 2007 and 28 March 2007. Members of the public are welcome at the meetings. Groups or residents who wish to make presentations on the Annual Report, can contact the Office of the Speaker on 057 391 3238. | MATJHABENG INVESTS IN FUTURE WITH MAYORAL BURSARIES | ||||||

South African and Matjhabeng Local Municipality are both faced by the challenge of lack of skills that would enable its economy to grow at expected rate. In 2006 Council approved ten mayoral bursaries to sponsor academically deserving students who intend to study in the areas of Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Land Survey, Architectural Science, Town and Regional Planning, Agricultural Sciences and Geology. Executive Mayor Mathabo Mokapo introduced the first recipients ever to the community at an Awards Ceremony, co-hosted by the Department of Education (Lewjeleputswa District) who honored achieving learners and schools in the Senior Certificate Examination 2006. The recipients of the mayoral bursaries are from the left Mosiuoa Mabatho, Lebohang Letsoisa, Patti Chongo, Trudy Nkwale, Executive Mayor Mathabo Mokapo (Matjhabeng Local Municipality), Monare Motshegoa, MEC Ouma Tsopo (Free State Department of Education), Aubrey Makhabane, Letube Teboho and Lerato Lelia. Goudveld High School (Goudveld Hoërskool) in Welkom was announced Best Overall Performing School in 2006 in the Lewjeleputswa District of the Free State Department of Education, and received trophies from both Matjhabeng Local Municipality and the FS Department of Education. Mr. Kallie Scott (middle, Principal of the school) is here with Executive Mayor Mathabo Mokapo and MEC Ouma Tsopo.
